Personal overview

Dr. Dunja Mladenic is an expert on study and development of Machine Learning, Data Mining and Text Mining techniques and their application on real-world problems from different areas such as, publishing, medicine, pharmacology, manufacturing, economy. Her current research focuses on data analysis, with particular interest in learning from Text and the Web including personal intelligent agents. She works as a researcher at the Department of Knowledge Technologies of the J. Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia since 1992. She graduate in Computer Science at University of Ljubljana and continued as a PhD student focused on Artificial Intelligence. She got her MSc and PhD in Computer Science at University of Ljubljana in 1995 and 1998 respectively. She was visiting School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, as a visiting researcher in 1996-1997 and in 2000-2001.

Dunja Mladenic was coordinating EU FP5 RTD project "Data Mining and Decision Support for business competitiveness: A European virtual enterprise (Sol-Eu-Net)" involving 12 partners from 7 countries (2000-2003). She is on the Management Board of several European research and development projects including FP6 IP projects SEKT - Semantically-Enabled Knowledge Technologies (2004-2006) and NeOn Lifecycle Support for Networked Ontologies (2006-2010), FP6 NoE project PASCAL - Pattern Analysis, Statistical Modelling and Computational Learning (2004-2007), FP6 STREP projects “MAGINATION Image-based Navigation in Multimedia Archives (2007-2010), SMART Statistical Multilingual Analysis for Retrieval and Translation (2007-2010), SWING Semantic Web Services Interoperability for Geospatial Decision Making (2006-2009), TAO Transitioning Applications to Ontologies (2006-2009), FP6 CA project KD-ubiq A blue print for ubiquitous knowledge discovery systems (2005-2008), FP6 SSA project CEC-WYS: Central European Centre for Women and Youth in Science (2004-2006). She was on management board of several European projects including KDNet - The European Knowledge Discovery Network of Excellence (2002-2004), KMForum - A Forum for the Exchange of European Knowledge Management Expertise) (2001-2003) and a tow-partner RTD project “Natural Language Processing for Text Classification” for Microsoft Research, Ltd. (2000-2002). She is or was leading several national research projects including System for statistical semantic Web, MetaService – Semantic composition of Grid services, Collection and analysis of Slovenian electronic publications on the Web, Design and analysis of Slovenian digitalized electronic publications of national importance, Analysis of large text data-sets. She was also involved in several national research projects lead by other researchers including Language resources for Slovene, Development of Digital Publishing with Distance Learning Support, Reflection in Machine Learning, Slovenian Economy in Transition towards Market Economy.

Dunja Mladenic is the Slovenian representative in EC Enwise STRATA ETAN Expert Group ”Promoting women scientists from the Central and Eastern European countries and the Baltic States to produce gender equality in science in the wider Europe”. She serves as project evaluator of project proposals for EC programme on Information and Society Technology (IST). In 2001, she was evaluator of project proposals for National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative on Information Technology Research (ITR), NSF 00-126, USA.

She is co-editor of the book Data Mining and Decision Support: Integration and Collaboration, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2003; the book Web Mining: from Web to Semantic Web, Lecture notes in AI, Berlin; Heidelberg; New York: Springer, 2004 and; the book Semantics, Web and Mining: Joint International Workshop, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Berlin; Heidelberg; New York: Springer, 2006. She has published several papers in refereed conferences and journals. She was co-chairing the 18th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML-2007). She was vice/senior chair of several major international conferences including KDD-2007, ICML-2006, ICDM-2003. She has served in the program committee of numerous international conferences including International Conference on Machine Learning, International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, SIAM Conference on Data Mining, International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery). She co-organized several international conferences and workshops including the major machine learning conferences ECML/PKDD-2007, ICML-99, Slovenian KDD conferences, several international Workshops on Text and Link Analysis, Workshops on Web Mining associated to the main international conferences from the area (IJCAI, AAAI, KDD, ICML, ICDM, ECML/PKDD).
